Make Love Not Porn

I recently read about this website; Make Love Not Porn and I decided to check it out for myself. The site’s purpose is to highlight the difference between “real world” sex and the sex often seen in adult movies, or “porn world” sex. It’s a simple, eye catching site with cute graphics and short, easy-to-read comparisons between the two types of sex they’ve established.

I’ve also read some mixed feedback about the site. Over at Fleshbot (Watch out, there are some graphic images on that page) they felt it was full of “assumptions—and misinformation… based on broad generalizations and limited experiences”. This view is a bit reactive and harsh in my opinion. To me, makelovenotporn.com is pre-algebra to a site like Fleshbot’s calculus. For those with limited sexual experience and/or knowledge beyond run of the mill, mainstream porn, it can be a good starting point. Obviously there’s a lot of missing information… but give folks a chance to get started, we can fill them in with more detailed info later! At least they start people off on the right foot by stating; “[in real life] some women like this, some women don’t. Some guys like to do this, some guys don’t”. Seems like a good place to begin, doesn’t it?

Besides, a key feature of the site is its ability to handle user submitted ideas/questions. This creates potential for more advanced information to make its way onto the site. I will say however that I’m not sure if makelovenotporn.com is meant to be an anti-porn site or if it’s simply trying to educate the uninformed. I tried, but failed to uncover any useful information about the site’s creators and what their goal may be. The true intentions of the site’s owners could determine if this ends up being an educational resource, or simply a covert attempt at moralization.

Thank you for your thoughtful and considered coverage of makelovenotporn.com. I’m the creator of the site, and I should say straightaway that it is categorically not intended to be anti-porn. In fact, as I explained when I launched the site in a short presentation at TED 2009 – http://blog.ted.com/2009/02/twitter_snapsho_3.php – I am a fan of porn and watch it regularly myself. The inspiration for the site came from personal experience (I date younger men) and the realization that in a society where most parents are too embarrassed to talk to their children about sex and educational institutions are not encouraged to fill the gap, porn has effectively become the sex education of today. In this context, porn tends to present broadly speaking one world view, and I wanted simply to balance that out with the fact that there are many different views in the real world, and to prompt an open and healthy dialogue around that, in the interests of encouraging more open, healthy and thoroughly enjoyable sexual relationships.

The site is in a very nascent stage at the moment, as I had no idea what the world’s reactions would be. I have been very encouraged by how positively most people have responded, and plan to develop the site further accordingly. I would welcome your own suggestions and input!

Thank you Cindy for sharing your reasons for starting the site. I’m glad to hear that the purpose is educational and not some sort of thinly veiled anti-sex, anti-porn morality play.

As I mentioned in my post, I think the site can be useful to many. I look forward to watching it grow.
