The Naked Truth: Young, Beautiful, and (HIV) Positive
Back in September I wrote a short post about a book I planned on checking out; The Naked Truth: Young, Beautiful, and (HIV) Positive by Marvelyn Brown and Courtney E. Martin.
The book tells the story of Marvelyn Brown, a self described “everyday teen” from Nashville, Tennessee who contracts HIV at age 19. As a result of her diagnosis and the struggles (and successes) that followed, Marvelyn is now an internationally recognized author and Emmy Award winning HIV/AIDS educator and activist.
The book itself is a quick and easy read. And its clearly been written for teen and young adult readers. The writing style and time spent recounting Marvlyn’s middle and high school years clearly illustrate this. Details of this clique and that clique… who stole who’s boyfriend, who fought who, etc. abound in the first half of the book.
Being well past my high school days, this portion of the book was occasionally annoying and un-interesting to me. However, I’m sure these details will pull young readers right in to her story and allow them to see a bit of themselves in Marvelyn. Although it felt at times like I was reading a high school drama, recounting these events in such detail will probably create a bond between Marvelyn and the target audience of young female readers.
